About Kerikeri
Planning Your Visit and Travel Tips
Kerikeri's subtropical climate makes it a year-round destination, though certain seasons offer distinct advantages. The town is accessible by car from major Northland centers, and having your own vehicle gives you the most flexibility to explore the waterfalls, wineries, and historic sites spread throughout the area.
Best Time to Visit Kerikeri
December through March brings warm summer weather, with temperatures ranging from 20-26°C (68-79°F). This is peak season for swimming at Charlie's Rock and enjoying the outdoor markets, but expect more crowds at popular spots like Rainbow Falls.
April to May offers pleasant autumn conditions with fewer visitors. The weather stays mild, making it comfortable for walking the Kerikeri River Track or exploring the Puketi Forest. Fruit picking season runs from October through May, with different fruits available at different times.
Winter (June to August) sees cooler temperatures of 10-16°C (50-61°F) and more rain. The waterfalls flow stronger during this time. Spring (September to November) brings blooming flowers at Roland's Wood and warming temperatures, perfect for outdoor activities without summer crowds.
Getting to and Around Kerikeri
The nearest airport is Bay of Islands (Kerikeri) Airport, located 7 km from town center. Direct flights connect to Auckland daily. Alternatively, drive from Auckland (approximately 3.5 hours via State Highway 1).
Once in Kerikeri, a rental car is highly recommended. Key attractions are spread along Kerikeri Road and surrounding rural areas. The Stone Store, Te Ahurea, and access to the Kerikeri River Track are on or near Kerikeri Road (246 Kerikeri Road area).
Limited bus services connect Kerikeri to Paihia and other Bay of Islands towns. Taxis and ride-sharing services are available but less convenient for visiting multiple waterfalls and wineries in one day.
